The Student Advisors
A startup created with some friends, “The Student Advisors” was our attempt to help incoming freshmen save money on college credits using what we learned during our time at school. It was also a chance to learn programs like Excel and Squarespace, as well as learning skills like how to run an online marketplace, advertise on social media and SEO.
SOJC Honors college thesis
My thesis explored how alternate forms of journalism, in this case solutions journalism, could facilitate increased engagement and heightened discourse on newspaper’s websites. In addition, accusations of bias were also compared across thousands of comments from 100 different articles and 5 different outlets. Solutions journalism proved to be more effective in promoting engagement than traditional news stories, offering an alternative in a world where the internet is increasingly choking out mid-sized newspaper outlets who attempt to compete with major outlets or aggregators.
Housing first solutions journalism
In an upper-level solutions journalism course, I had the opportunity to deep dive into the topic of homelessness and housing first.
Influencer credibility Research study
As part of the SOJC Honors College, I, along with three peers, ran a research study on the credibility of an endorsement tweet by a perceived influencer as opposed to a perceived non-influencer.
The Changing Role of Social Media in American Presidential Campaigns
In another SOJC Honors College research study, three peers and I researched the changing role of social media during the 2016 presidential election. We looked at different factors such as the platform, perception of social media, usage of social media, and increasing echo chambers on social media to determine what the future of social media as a political medium may be in the future.
Hey, I’m Sam
(and that’s Tully)
I grew up outside of Salem, Oregon, in a 24 acre state park with 100 foot tall pine trees in the middle of cornfields (literally). In 2017, I graduated from a high school that was also in the middle of cornfields (once again, literally).
After graduating high school I attended the University of Oregon, where I found my passion for writing, marketing, research and business.
I now work as a Change and Communications analyst at Point B Consulting. Feel free to reach out, I’m always up for grabbing coffee and hearing people’s life stories :).
